ABSTRACT: The recast of the energy performance of buildings directive stipulates that by 2020 all new buildings should reach nearly zero energy levels (2019 for buildings owned or occupied by public authorities). Therefore technicians involved in the design, conception and approval of such buildings should be able to understand and apply nearly zero-energy buildings (nZEB) concepts both towards new buildings and the refurbishment of existing ones.

ABSTRACT: The management of urban environment, together with the preservation of the natural environment and the creation of a sustainable built environment, is a complex challenge for contemporary societies. In the name of progress, cities are contributing for the degradation of all surrounding ecosystems.

ABSTRACT: In view of the objectives of the European Union (20‐20‐20), it is necessary to con‐tribute to the rehabilitation of existing buildings by promoting the densification of oversized houses, while complying with up‐to‐date comfort standards and  codes. In this sense, this research is aimed to analyse this problem at the outskirts of Braga, by identifying the type‐morphology of oversized buildings, assessing the degree of satisfaction and expectations of owners and developing and testing a systematic design tool.

ABSTRACT: Social housing public policy in Ecuador, whose ultimate goal was to solve the housing shortage, prioritized the "quantity at low cost" and neglected the importance of minimum living conditions and comfort. This also happened in Cuenca, where social housing as submitted low quality and has been developed through various state programs.

ABSTRACT: This paper exposes na analysis of roof´s characteristics of recente built single-family dwellings in real-estate groups of Concepcion, Chile, looking forward to integrate solar collectors. A record of 2,139 dwellings built after 2006, corresponding to 68.28% of the total is done, which show a variety of sloped roofs. The roofs have a media surface area of 84.7m2 fragmented between three and twelve wings, with a medium slope of 37.48°, which generates at least a majoror secondary useful wing with an average surface of 33.9m2 facing north, east or west. This area receives a total annual radiation between 954kWha/m2 to 1732.8Kwha/m2 depending on azimuth or roof´s slope.

ABSTRACT: This work exposes the application of integrated design theories to develop an innovative prefabricated housing system called “CASA+”. This model is the answer for the growing environmental constraints to encourage new housing design strategies. The proposal achieves high density, flexible growth, environmental comfort and minimum fuel consumption.

ABSTRACT: Environmental simulation is often applied in advanced stages of building design or when they are already executed, and pose minor adjustments with additional costs and low impact. This paper presents an experience in early stages of real-estate housing design, through the development of simulations by the same designers. It explores various solutions that provide substantial improvements in environmental performance with users’ acceptance.

ABSTRACT: Taking as reference the historical context of the expansion phenomenon of Medellin and the anthropogenic processes based on Moravia´s neighborhood, this paper aims to understand the Integral Improvement Plan (PPMIM) that has been developed between 2004-2011, that was based on sustainable concepts on the recognition and strengthening of the different actors´ capacities for the construction of new associations based on mutual trustbonds.
