ABSTRACT: The concepts about sustainable development include the environmental, economic and social sustainability, emphasizing the quality of life of people and communities. In the case of Brazil, the investment in this field can be considered as being recent in what to the scientific research is concerned. The country does not have a wide database regarding its five regions, capable of covering aspects such as climate, along with the social, cultural and economic reality.

ABSTRACT: The social and environmental urgency of large-scale integrated retrofitting of the European residential building stock is widely acknowledged and supported by all Member States. However, the European building sector is currently still not able to offer an integral solution for deep renovation toward nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) for reasonable costs. MORE CONNECT project aims to tackle this issue by developing cost optimal solutions to renovate buildings towards nZEB.

ABSTRACT: Many regulations and initiatives to promote the reduction of the energy consumption and carbon emissions have been implemented in the building sector. However, they are mostly targeted for new buildings. In order to have an effective impact and reach the goals that are being established, it is necessary to act in new but especially in the existing buildings, which correspond to the majority of the European building stock.

ABSTRACT: Sustainability assessment has been promoted by several institutions and organizations in order to encourage sustainable practices in the building sector. The scope of the first assessment tools was on buildings and building solutions. Research within this field of knowledge is already well established.

ABSTRACT: The construction sector is responsible for enormous environmental impacts. Those are mainly due to the use of materials, energy and land. The impact of a single building is normally directly dependent on the size of the building or in the area of land it occupies.

ABSTRACT: The discussion of the difficulties in the integration of environmental sustainability requirements in public buildings and the subsequent evaluation of the design projects leads to the analysis of the limits imposed by the laws governing the public procurement process, the formulation of the call for bids and the Terms of Reference for the assessment criteria. In 1993, Brazil implemented into practice the 37th article of Brazilian Federal Constitution by means of the signature of federal law number 8666 enforcing general rules on administrative contracts for design projects (construction and engineering services).

ABSTRACT: The Portuguese socio-economic context of the last decades of XX century led to a great investment by the construction industry in new construction. This tendency continued even after the number of buildings had largely overcome the number of families.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this research is to evaluate sound insulation behavior of double windows, when a second window is placed upon a previous one, keeping an air layer between them. This was done through standard tests carried out at the insulation chamber of the Acoustics Laboratory of Federal University of Santa Maria in accordance with international norms ISO 10140-2 and ISO 717-1.

ABSTRACT: Bioclimatic architecture consider that the climate is an important variable in the design process. In this context, environment comfort can be naturally obtained for the users of buildings by using bioclimatic strategies, which depending on the climate, the construction techniques and the type of use.
